What We Know Right Now About The Vikings Offseason

Posted Jan 8, 2014

There are some important things we don’t know about the Vikings right now. For example, we don’t know who will be chosen to be the team’s new head coach. We also don’t know which players will come and go as part of the usual roster turnover that happens each offseason.

But there are also several important things about the Vikings that we do know just a couple weeks into the offseason, and now is a good time to analyze a few of them and discuss how it can help lead to a better Vikings season in 2014.

Vikings

The Vikings hold the 8th Overall Pick
Once the 2014 NFL Draft begins in early May, Vikings fans won’t have long to wait until their favorite team makes a selection. The Vikings hold the eighth overall choice and, presuming they stay there and select a player, are bound to add a difference-maker to their roster. The Vikings have found success in the Top 10 over the past decade, selecting players such as Matt Kalil (fourth in 2012), Adrian Peterson (seventh in 2007) and Kevin Williams (ninth in 2003), and they’ll likely look to continue that trend in 2014.

Vikings Hold Full Complement of Picks Seattle’s 3rd-Rounder
The Vikings will go into the 2014 draft fully loaded and with an additional third-round pick thanks to the Percy Harvin trade with Seattle last year. This is good news for a couple of reasons. First, the Vikings are on a two-year run of outstanding drafts, with nine of 10 selections from 2012 and seven of nine selections from 2013 still on the roster. Having eight more selections in the 2014 draft has the Vikings in good position to strengthen the roster. Secondly, having a full complement of picks plus an additional third-rounder gives the Vikings flexibility in the draft to make trades – up or down – in order to secure the players they want at the times they deem appropriate.

Vikings

Scheduled Free Agents
Currently, these 14 Vikings are scheduled to his unrestricted free agency this offseason: DE Jared Allen, OL Joe Berger, LB Desmond Bishop, CB Chris Cook, DT Fred Evans, QB Josh Freeman, RB Toby Gerhart, DE Everson Griffen, OL Charlie Johnson, LB Marvin Mitchell, WR Jerome Simpson, OL J’Marcus Webb, WR Joe Webb and DT Kevin Williams. Also, LB Larry Dean and CB Marcus Sherels are scheduled to be restricted free agents this offseason.

Vikings Are 8th in Waiver Order Until Week 3 of Regular Season
Because of their overall place in the NFL standings after the 2013 season, the Vikings will hold the eighth spot in waiver order for the entire offseason and into Week 3 of the regular season. This means the Vikings have eighth priority to claim any player who is required to pass through waivers after being released from his team.

2014 Opponents
We don’t know when they will play them, but we know the identity of the Vikings opponents in 2014.

The Vikings will host the following teams at TCF Bank Stadium: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, NY Jets and Washington Redskins.

The Viking will hit the road to play the following teams: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, St. Louis Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Offseason Program Could Begin April 7
As set forth in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), because the Vikings will have hired a new head coach following the conclusion of the previous regular season, the offseason program is allowed to commence no sooner than the first Monday in April. This means the Vikings new head coach could begin the offseason program as early as April 7.
