Helping Hand: 4 Vikings Who Could Impact Title Games

Posted Jan 19, 2014

If the remaining four teams in Sunday’s championship games conducted a draft of Vikings players, who would they select and why? In this hypothetical exercise, I think there are four distinct answers and good reasoning behind them.

Let’s take a look (shockingly, Adrian Peterson is not one of them)…

San Francisco 49ers: CB Xavier Rhodes
Starting cornerback Carlson Rogers is expected to play in the NFC title game, but he has missed the past few games with a hamstring injury. The addition of Rhodes would give the 49ers a great backup option if Rogers can’t finish the game. Even if Rogers can play the whole game, Rhodes improves the team’s depth and gives them a strong nickel and dime package.

New England Patriots: TE Kyle Rudolph
There are plenty of holes on New England’s defense because of injuries, but why not give Tom Brady another offensive weapon? With Rudolph, the Patriots feel the sting of Rob Gronkowski’s loss a little less because they get a field-stretching option at tight end in Rudolph, who last year had nine touchdown receptions.

Seattle Seahawks: WR Cordarrelle Patterson
Percy Harvin is out, but one could argue the Seahawks would upgrade overall with the addition of Patterson. He was the NFL’s best kickoff returner this season and would help the Seahawks in that phase, but he also came on strongly as an offensive playmaker at the end of the regular season, as well, and would aide a Seahawks offense that is averaging just 246 yards per game over its last three contests.

Denver Broncos: S Harrison Smith
A pass over the top of Denver’s defense is what ended their postseason last year, as the Ravens pulled out an improbable win thanks to an improbable pass on their way to representing the AFC in and ultimately winning the Super Bowl. The addition of Smith to the back end of Denver’s defense would drastically decrease the chances of a similar breakdown and would also give the Broncos a playmaker on defense who can play near the line of scrimmage in run support or in space in pass coverage.
