Many Happy Returns For Patterson, Sherels

Posted Dec 24, 2013

It’s the season of giving, and as we sit just one day before Christmas it’s an appropriate time to recognize two Vikings who have been giving their team good field position all season. With one game to go, kickoff returner Cordarrelle Patterson and punt returner Marcus Sherels are poised to distinguish themselves among the NFL’s top returners.

Patterson currently ranks first in NFL kick return average (33.6), and he’s just two yards shy of the NFL (post-1970 merger) single-season kickoff return average record of 35.4 yards set by Jim Duncan in 1970. Patterson also ranks second in total kickoff return yards in the NFL this season, and he’s just four yards shy of breaking the Vikings single-season record for kickoff return yards, which was set by Buster Rhymes in 1985 (1,345).

2013 Kickoff Return Average
1. Cordarrelle Patterson (Min) – 33.6

2. Cordarrelle Patterson (2013) – 1,342
3. Koren Robinson (2005) – 1,221

Sherels also ranks among the NFL’s best in his discipline, but he does need one more punt return to qualify for season-long stats. Assuming he gets that return on Sunday in Detroit, here’s where Sherels stands in current NFL and historical Vikings rankings…
